New Essence The Cushion Eyeliner | Review

Cushion makeup seems to be all the rage these days and it has made its way from Asia all the way to our local shelfs. From cushion foundations to lip products and now even liquid eyeliners,… you name it, there’s a cushion version. Essence must have noticed this trend, since they added a cushion eyeliner to their range for Spring & Summer 2017. Of course, I’m always down to trying new affordable and innovative makeup, so I had to give this one a try and see if it actually works.

The new Essence Cushion Eyeliner is housed in a small transparant glass jar that has a black screw-off cap. This packaging looks similar to most gel eyeliners and is quite compact and travel-friendly. Even though this jar looks quite generic and not that fancy, I do appreciate the rose-golden accents since they add a nice touch. The only downside is that unlike most gel liners in similar packaging, this eyeliner doesn’t come with a brush, so make sure you get an eyeliner brush with it if you don’t own one already.

Inside the jar there’s a black sponge soacked with liquid eyeliner. So even though this packaging looks quite similar to gel eyeliners, don’t be fooled since this is indeed a liquid liner.

For now, this Cushion Eyeliner is only available in the shade black, but I definitely hope Essence will expand the color range and add a few pops of color.

Brand’s description:

Cushion: the mega trend from asia! The integrated sponge is soaked with a highly pigmented eyeliner texture and dispenses just the right amount for perfect eyeliner styles – no matter whether you’re going for accurate lines or cool cat eyes.

The black is jet black, super pigmented and dries down to a semi-matte finish. The formula is quite liquid, but dries down fast and is easy to build up. By putting just a little bit of pressure on the sponge, your brush gets soaked with eyeliner, which is enough product to create a small line. I find the sponge to be extremely nice to work with and I love how it comes with a lot of product.

The lasting-power of this eyeliner is mediocre and it’s definitely not waterproof. Whenever I use this with an eyeshadow primer, it lasts up to 8 hours on my eyes without smudging or crumbling off. It’s also really easy to remove with an oil-based eye makeup remover.

Ingredients:

AQUA (WATER), AMMONIUM ACRYLATES COPOLYMER, ALOE BARBADENSIS LEAF JUICE, POLYURETHANE-35, LAURETH-21, POLYGLYCERYL-2 CAPRATE, METHYLPROPANEDIOL, ALCOHOL DENAT., PEG-40 HYDROGENATED CASTOR OIL, PANTHENOL, TOCOPHEROL, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS (SUNFLOWER) SEED OIL, GLYCERIN, BUTYLENE GLYCOL, TRI-C12-13 ALKYL CITRATE, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, LAURETH-30, DISODIUM DECETH-5 SULFOSUCCINATE, STEARIC ACID, PALMITIC ACID, PHENYLPROPANOL, ETHYLHEXYLGLYCERIN, TETRASODIUM GLUTAMATE DIACETATE, CITRIC ACID, SODIUM HYDROXIDE, PHENOXYETHANOL, SODIUM DEHYDROACETATE, CI 77266 (BLACK 2) (NANO)

I’m wearing the Essence Cushion Eyeliner as my black liner.

This cushion eyeliner is such a hit & I’m so excited Essence added this to their permanent range! The formula is easy to work with, I really enjoy the cushion ‘idea’ and the eyeliner is super black. Although the formula isn’t really waterproof, it doesn’t transfer or smudge throughout the day and the cushion is packed with pigment. The only downside is that you do have to own a great eyeliner brush, since it doesn’t come with an applicator.

The new Cushion Eyeliner by Essence is now available at your local Essence retailer for €2,99 (3 ml). If you live in The Netherlands or Belgium, you can also order yours on the official Kruidvat webshop here!
