New Essence ’08 Velvet Matt’ Longlasting Lipstick

I haven’t been this excited about an Essence lipstick for a while now! For some reason, I just didn’t care that much about their lip range anymore, but luckily this has changed. With the release of their new Spring & Summer products, I found this gorgeous cool-toned brownish nude that immediately caught my attention. Of course I decided to share this beauty with you guys, which is what this post is all about.

What I love about the packaging of this Velvet Matt Long-lasting lipstick is that it comes in the same color as the lipstick itself, which is always nice if you have more than one lipstick from the same range. The packaging looks simple, yet chic and it feels sturdy and not cheap at all. The lipstick itself has an ‘E’ engraved in it, which adds an extra touch.

The Long-lasting lipstick range isn’t new and has been part of Essence’s line for a while now, but since February they added a few new shades. 08 Velvet Matt is one of those newer lipstick shades.

08 Velvet Matt is a grayish brown nude. It’s a cool toned lipstick and a shade that is trending right now. This shade is definitely one that you have to able to pull off, I don’t think it’s a universally flattering shade whatsoever. On me, I personally think it looks amazing!

The color pay-off and pigmentation of this lipstick isn’t the best ever. For this swatch (and lip swatch down below), I had to go over it a few times, as in 5-6, for it to look somewhat opaque. After that, you do get a gorgeous opaque lipstick, you just can’t achieve this after one swipe or application.

Even-though it says ‘velvet matt’, I think the finish of this lipstick leans more towards a creamy velvet finish than a matte one, especially the first hour. After about 1-2 hours it starts to loose some of the creaminess and it turns into a matte lipstick.

I have to say I’m a bit obsessed with this shade, I think it looks absolutely stunning! It’s unique and I’m happy to see that affordable brands are stepping up their game when it comes to color selection. I do wish the finish was a bit more matte, but overall I really like how it looks on my lips. The formula is also super comfortable to wear, especially if you’re used to really drying matte liquid lipsticks. I wouldn’t necessarily call this lipstick ‘long-lasting’, but it does stay on my lips for about 2-3 hours. Also, this lipstick doesn’t get into any fine lines on my lips, which tends to happen a lot with affordable matte lipsticks.

There are definitely pro’s and cons to this lipstick, but overall I’m really pleased with it! I adore the shade and how it looks on me, I think the finish is beautiful, although I do wish it was little bit more matte. This formula is super comfortable to wear, but the color pay-off could have been better. But considering this lipstick costs about €2, I would totally recommend it!

The new Essence Long-lasting Lipstick in 08 Velvet Matt is available at your local Kruidvat and online for €2,39.
