The new Velvet Sticks by Essence were probably the products I was most excited for out of their new Spring & Summer items. I feel like I say that about all of their new releases, but these guys really sparked my interest. You probably already know that I’m a huge fan of matte lips, so I was really happy to see that the drugstore is coming out with more and more matte lippies. I decided to only pick up two of the shades and give them a try before buying more (how nice of me!).
The Velvet Sticks come in a crayon-like pencil. Each pencil comes in the same shade as the stick itself, which is a great indication of the shade. I think the overall look of these is very beautiful, however, I really dislike how the name of the shades only come on a sticker on the cap and not on the actual pencil.
Even though these look like they’re twistable, they’re not and you do have to sharpen these whenever they run out. I think this is such a pity and I wish Essence would’ve made these retractable.
The Velvet Sticks are available in a total of 5 different shades:
❤ Nude Hero
❤ Peony Star
❤ Mega Melon
❤ Cherry Crash
❤ Plum Perfect
I decided to go for the 2 most neutral ones.
Nude Hero is a nude that has more of a coral undertone. The color is beautiful, but I really hate how it accentuated the fine lines on my lips. Nude Hero just didn’t apply as smoothly as I had wished and didn’t look the best on me.
Peony Star is a dusty mauve that is still quite neutral and I would consider this to be a nude as well, just a darker one. This is definitely my favorite shade out of the two! It doesn’t emphasize the fine lines on my lips and looks just beautiful with my skin-tone.
As you can see, they both have really amazing pigmentation and a velvety semi-matte finish. When it comes to lasting power, I would say they last about 2 hours on the lips, without eating or drinking. These will rub off ones you eat something or drink and they’re definitely not transfer-proof. That being said, they are so so so comfortable to wear! They don’t feel drying on my lips at all, which is something I really appreciate, especially since they have a velvety matte finish.
RICINUS COMMUNIS (CASTOR) SEED OIL, ETHYLHEXYL PALMITATE, COPERNICIA CERIFERA (CARNAUBA) WAX, PARAFFIN, HYDROGENATED PALM KERNEL OIL, CERA ALBA (BEESWAX), OLYMETHYLSILSESQUIOXANE, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX, HDI/TRIMETHYLOL HEXYLLACTONE CROSSPOLYMER, TOCOPHEROL, AROMA (FLAVOR), LECITHIN, ASCORBYL PALMITATE, GLYCERYL STEARATE, GLYCERYL OLEATE, CITRIC ACID, METHYLPARABEN, PROPYLPARABEN, CI 15850 (RED 7 LAKE), CI 77491 (IRON OXIDES), CI 77499 (IRON OXIDES), CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE).
Overall I would say these are okay. I really like them, but I’m not super impressed. On my lips, these don’t have the greatest lasting power and Nude Hero really accentuated the fine lines on my lips. I do enjoy their finish and they’re super comfortable to wear. Peony Star is definitely my favorite out of the two and the one I would recommend the most!
The new Essence Velvet Sticks Matt Lip Colours are now available at your local Kruidvat and online for €1,99 (2 g), which is such an affordable price.
