Makeup Geek Lit Duochrome Highlighter | Review

About a month ago, Makeup Geek released an entire line of new signature & duochrome highlighters.  Since Makeup Geek is one my favorite affordable brands and highlighters are some of my favorite makeup products to buy, I had to resist the temptation of ordering these from Marlena’s website. But when they launched on Beautybay.com all of my resistance left my body. I immediately went online and ordered one of the Duochrome Highlighters in Lit. Are you curious to know what this new MUG highlighter looks like and how it performs? Keep on reading!

The Makeup Geek Highlighters come in a black cardboard box and are housed in a luxurious and sturdy gunmetal mirrored compact that has a soft touch bottom. It has the MUG logo on the front and the shade name is indicated on the back with gorgeous rose-gold details. It’s basically the same packaging as the MUG Vault, just tinier. These compacts also come with a mirror as big as the pan, which makes this compact perfect to travel with. The pan itself also has a beautiful pattern, which I think is very typical Makeup Geek style.

Brand’s description:

Come to the light and illuminate your most-loved features with Makeup Geek Highlighters! The super-smooth and incredibly pigmented formula provides a reflective luminosity that ranges from subtle to extreme—use a light hand for a natural, lit-from-within glow or pack it on for an intense, strobed effect. Available in seven signature shades and six duochrome shades that can be applied to both the face and body.

As I’ve mentioned, MUG released 7 new signature highlighters & 6 new duochrome highlighters:

Signature:
❤ Daybreak: a soft iridescent peach created for medium skin tones.
❤ Firework: an iridescent true copper powder ideal for deep skin tones.
❤ Glitz: an iridescent iced pink perfect for porcelain skin tones.

❤ Ignite: a reflective golden bronze created for deep skin tones.
❤ Luster: a blushed tan with a mesmerizing reflective finish perfect for fair skin tones.
❤ Midnight Sun: a soft champagne powder with a reflective finish designed for fait skin tones.

❤ Rekindle: a rich rose gold created for medium skin tones.

Duochrome:
❤ Ablaze: a copper and red ideal for deep skin tones.
Celestial: an ice blue and violet perfect for porcelain skin tones.

❤ Electrify: a cream and butter yellow powder perfect for fair skin tones.

❤ Lit: a peach and pink perfect for fair skin tones.

❤ Moon Phase: an ice blue and purple powder perfect for porcelain skin tones.

❤ Psychedelic: a peach and pink powder ideal for medium skin tones.

Lit is a warm peachy-pink duochrome with a luminous frosted finish. This shade is perfect to highlight fair skin tones with, although I think even porcelain and medium skin tones could definitely pull this off as well!

As you can see, the pigmentation and color pay-off is alright, but it’s not opaque. These duochrome highlighters have more of a sheer, soft and iridescent finish.

The formula is absolutely amazing! This highlighter feels very creamy and soft and isn’t dry or powdery. Whenever you swirl you brush in the pan, there’s minimal powder kick-up and it applies very easily onto the skin. This formula doesn’t emphasize uneven skin tone or texture and doesn’t look patchy whatsoever.

This duochrome highlighters blends effortlessly onto the skin and you can go for both a softer natural highlight or stronger intense highlight.

The color selection is truly outstanding. There’s a highlighter for every single skin tone in this range, which you don’t see too often from other brands!

As with all of the MUG products, these highlighters are:

  • Talc-free
  • Great for sensitive skin
  • Cruelty-free
  • Paraben-free
  • Vegan
  • Made in the USA

Ingredients:

Triethylhexanoin, Magnesium Myristate, Silica, Boron Nitride, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin. May Contain: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Tin Oxide (CI 77861), Iron Oxides (CI 77499, CI 77491, CI 77492), Carmine (CI 75470).
I’m wearing the MUG Duochrome Highlighter in ‘Lit’ on the tops of my cheekbones.

Makeup Geek used to be such an affordable high-quality brand, which is why I think €23 is a lot of money for a MUG highlighter. That being said, I’m absolutely in love with the formula and it’s definitely a high-quality product! Even though I think it’s a lot of money, I wouldn’t hesitate to pay that amount again to add another shade to my collection, maybe a signature one this time.

The Makeup Geek Duochrome Highlighters are available on the official MUG website for $20 (7 g), but keep in mind that you might have to pay additional custom fees if you live in Europe. That’s why I would recommend ordering on Beautybay if you live in Europe, where they retail for €23,30. I definitely think these are worth the price, but I also think it’s a bummer MUG is becoming less affordable.

Heel mooie highlighter, amai!
